Whether you're ordering from an international retailer, sending a package through DHL or FedEx, or filling in a visa application, knowing how to correctly write a Korean address in English can save you significant trouble. This guide covers everything.
1. The Three Core Fields
Most international shipping forms break the address into three fields:
- Zip / Postal Code: 5-digit Korean zip code
- Address Line 1: English road address (building number + road name + district + city)
- Address Line 2: Building name, apartment building number (dong), and unit number (ho)
2. Worked Examples
Example 1 — Office or commercial building
Korean address: 서울 중구 세종대로 110, 정부서울청사 5층
- Zip: 03142
- Address Line 1: 110, Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul
- Address Line 2: Government Complex-Seoul, 5F
- Country: Republic of Korea
Example 2 — Apartment
Korean address: 서울 강남구 테헤란로 152, 래미안아파트 101동 1502호
- Zip: 06235
- Address Line 1: 152, Teheran-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul
- Address Line 2: Raemian Apt, 101-dong, 1502-ho
- Country: Republic of Korea
Example 3 — Gyeonggi Province
Korean address: 경기도 성남시 분당구 판교역로 235
- Zip: 13494
- Address Line 1: 235, Pangyoyeok-ro, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do
- Address Line 2: (building/unit if applicable)
- Country: Republic of Korea
3. City and State Fields
Some forms ask for City and State/Province separately:
- City: Use the city or district. Examples: Seoul, Seongnam-si, Gangnam-gu
- State / Province: Use the metropolitan or provincial level. Examples: Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Busan
Since Seoul is a Special Metropolitan City, it is both the city and the state—entering Seoul for both fields is correct.
4. Courier-Specific Tips
DHL / FedEx
Accurate English addresses speed up customs clearance. Always include dong and ho (apartment block and unit) in Address Line 2. Add a Korean phone number in international format (+82-xx-xxxx-xxxx) so the courier can contact the recipient if needed.
Amazon Global
Select South Korea as the country. Enter the English road address in Address Line 1 and apartment details in Line 2.
5. Seven Common Mistakes
- Omitting the zip code — Always include the full 5-digit code.
- Putting apartment details in Line 1 — Dong and ho belong in Line 2.
- Writing only "Korea" — Use Republic of Korea or South Korea to avoid North/South ambiguity.
- Leaving out the district (gu) — Always include Jung-gu, Gangnam-gu, etc.
- Mixing Korean characters into an English form — Use Roman characters only.
- Reversing the building number and road name — Korean English addresses put the number first: 110, Sejong-daero (not Sejong-daero 110).
- Writing only the apartment complex name — Couriers cannot deliver without the dong and ho numbers.
